The build-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, could see British edge protection receive its moment in the spotlight, and build on the legacy of London 2012.
During the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games, all eyes may have been on venues like the Velodrome and Aquatics Centre, where Team GB won 12 and three medals in cycling and swimming respectively.
But as construction work proceeds on the 2014 venues in Sochi, British construction firms – including, but not limited to, those who worked on London 2012 structures – will have their part to play at roof level and above.
Olympic legacy ambassador Lord Coe was in Madrid last week to speak about Britain’s ongoing role in delivering future Games, and for once the Winter Olympics got the recognition it deserves.
“”Based on the expertise that they developed in London, British companies are now winning contracts to help other nations deliver their Olympic Games,”” he said.
Significantly, British firms have already been awarded contracts to provide the roofs at venues including the Sochi bobsleigh run and ice hockey arena.
Building on the impressive safety record from the delivery of London 2012, it is likely that the venues will incorporate safety ladders for roof access, along with edge protection to prevent falls – measures that are particularly important for winter sports venues, where roof surfaces may be icy and slippery.
